05. <in god we trust/> 2024
Analyse an academic paper, creating a publication that evokes the thematic through line. I chose a paper titled “NAZI PUNKS FOLK OFF: LEISURE, NATIONALISM, CULTURAL IDENTITY AND THE CONSUMPTION OF METAL AND FOLK MUSIC”. This topic resonates with me, as I have been passionate about metal music and have been listening to it since I was 15. The paper specifically analyses the societal impact of black metal and English folk music, and their respective scenes.
Activists of the far-right attempting to influence and infiltrate two music scenes to push their racialised ideologies onto larger audiences. The paper analyses debates found online, combined with different means of research, observing how these scenes have both seemingly resisted and adopted controversial ideologies.
Visually, I chose to focus in on the online nature of the research referenced throughout the entire paper. With online forums and chat-sites as well as other research papers all involved in the creation of this paper. I also had a focus on black metal imagery, mixed with the early 2000s internet in mind, all of the images were downscaled to better evoke as if you were viewing them on an old CRT. My title for this publication is in reference to The Dead Kennedys 1981 EP, with the notorious song seen quoted on the second page, give it a listen.
